Xiaomi Redmi S2 Hands on Review

Xiaomi is going great with their smartphones having less prices and more specifications. Talking about sales in India, in Q1, Xiaomi is now number 2 leading smartphone brand after Samsung. The reason is quite obvious, with the smartphones at decent price, everyone craze to buy Xiaomi smartphones. Recently, Xiaomi launched another camera-centric smartphone named as Redmi S2 with 16MP Front camera as its main highlight. I reviewed this device for about a week and came to the best, possible and unbiased conclusions. I don't know why it isn't launched in India yet, maybe because there are already many Xiaomi smartphones it would be compared with ( Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Pro, Mi A1, Redmi 5 Plus). So, here I'm presenting all of you a hands-on quick review for Redmi S2:

Xiaomi Redmi S2 specifications

  • 5.99 inches FHD+ display (1080x2280 pixels)
  • 18:9 aspect ratio
  • MIUI 9 with Android Oreo
  • Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC
  • 3GB/4GB RAM
  • 12MP+ 5MP (f/2.2 aperture lens) Dual rear camera setup
  • 16MP Front Camera with AI
  • 32GB/64GB (expanadable upto 64GB)
  • 3080 mAH Battery

Redmi S2 Design and Display

The design part of Redmi S2 is not improved at all. If you're aware of Redmi 5 Plus smartphone, then just assume it's another copy of that smartphone in terms of design. There are basically no advancements and improvements. On the back, you get a fingerprint sensor and vertical dual rear camera setuo just like iPhone X. The lower part of this device has two grills but only 1 of them is a speaker. But don't ever worry about the voice quality as the sound is very high. The back is made up of metallic to protect the smartphone from heat and shock.

Now coming to the display part, Redmi S2 has FHD+ display which is a wonderful thing. I won't say it's a bezel-less smartphone but still it has 18:9 aspect ratio which makes it look more wonderful and fascinating. There is also a coating of Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the display of this device. Overall, you would get a wonderful viewing angles.

I tested many things in its display: brightness level is damn too high which means contents will be available even if you use in sunlight. Also, there is a 70.2% NTSC color gamut which would produce natural and bright colors.

Redmi S2 Performance

Redmi S2 is launched and built with Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, the same processor which is used in many Xiaomi devices like Mi A1, Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 4, Redmi Note 3. I thought if Xiaomi was launching a smartphone, they would have launched at least with Snapdragon 636SoC or Snapdragon 660 SoC but its okay to adjust and adapt.

Now, talking about the Snapdragon 625 processor, it is a wonderful processor with better gaming and overall performance results. Not only it is battery efficient but also it won't produce heat while you play heavy games or use camera. I played many heavy games on this device like PUBG, Subway Surfers, Asphalt 8 but didn;t notice any heating issues or lags. The reason lies in the GPU used with this processor: Adreno 509. So, if you're a gaming lover, never hesitate to buy this smartphone.

Also, you get 3GB/4GB RAM options available, but I would recommend you for 4GB variant if you want to play heavy games.

Redmi S2 Camera

When Xiaomi officials were presenting this smartphone, they were highlighting too much in its camera notifying us that Redmi S2 is strictly a camera-centric smartphone. Well, the camera specfications are superb making us feel exactly same as they presented. The rear camera setup is a combination of 12MP and 5MP cameras for clicking beautiful DSLR like images.

Talking about the Rear camera, you get  AI Portrait Mode, AI Smart Beauty, HDR, and Face Unlock (with face recognition). The quality of the images in the day light are just uncomparable. However, in the night conditions, it performs very well. Thanks to the Xiaomi team and their engineers.

Also, the main highlight of this smartphone is its 16MP Front camera with Front HDR and AI Smart Beauty mode. Also, you get a Face Unlock feature in this device. I remember Xiaomi launched Redmi Y1 last year with same 16MP camera but I feel the technology used in this camera is quite new and innovative. I clicked many pictures and the results were quite awesome.

Clearly, I have no complains in this segment.

Now, here is the one point I felt Xiaomi should have done better. Be it Mi A1 or Redmi Y1 Lite, Xiaomi has always problems with batteries. In the same pricing segments, where other smartphone companies are providing batteries above 5000 mAH, Xiaomi is the only one sticking to their traditional 3080 mAH Battery. I guess this is their lucky number as in Mi A1 they used the same Li-Ion battery.

I used their device for about a week, but on a complete charge, it doesn't last for more than a day. Now that you spend more amount, you expect a smartphone with high battery as well. Long way to go Xiaomi!

Pros and Cons

  • Processor for heavy gaming
  • Front Camera
  • AI Portrait Mode
  • Face Unlock
  • 18:9 aspect ratio

  • Same Old design as of Redmi 5 Plus
  • Low Battery
  • No upgrade in processor

My Opinions

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 will be available in China very soon in CNY 999 (approx Rs.10,400) for 3GB/32GB variant and CNY 1299 (approx Rs.13,500) for 4GB/64GB variant. I don't know about China but if it was available in India, I would have been the first person to snatch and buy this smartphone.

The design looks very premium and it gives immense pleasure when you hold this device in your hands, I used this for about a week, and now I feel I got to buy this from China as well. Simply, the prices are too low if we compare it to any other smartphone in Indian industry. Also, the camera performance is more than awesome.

I personally recommend this smartphone to all the ones who can buy this smartphone and are looking desperately for a new smartphone within the same budget. Till then! take care
