Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime In-Depth Review

Samsung has launched their first smartphone in 2018 and I believe it is wonderful to look at first. The look of this smartphone is not veru unique as we have already seen this design in earlier models like Galaxy J7(2016), but the specifications inside are crazy for sure. Samsung is not very attentive towards their mid-ranged smartphones and they are very busy with their upcoming flagship smartphones, Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ which will be launching probably on 26th February, but Samsung realised they have to contribute more on mid-ranged smartphones sections as well and give tough competitions to Xiaomi, Huawei, Vivo and Oppo smartphones. If you ask me personally, my vote is for Xiaomi Mi A1 for the best mid-ranged smartphone as it has all the features. Also, on the other hand, Honor 9 Lite is performing well these days. Now, to counter these smartphones, Samsung has launched their mid-ranged killer smartphone, Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime. I used this device for almost 3 days and now I'm back again to review this smartphone. So, here is the full proof in-depth review for Galaxy On7 Prime:

The Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime features a 5.5 inches display but unfortunately, it has some bezels on its front portion. One thing I don't like about Samsung here is, even though seeing the trend nowadays 18:9 aspect ratio, but Samsung has still provided with traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. It has front capacitive touch buttons just like other mid-range smartphones. The fingerprint sensor is also front-mounted which is placed on a capacitive touch button. You don't need to press the button to unlock the smartphone, instead just slightly tap on the touchbutton and it takes around 0.5 seconds to unlock your smartphone.

The fingerprint sensor although takes half a second delay but is damn accurate. I tested with some random fingers and tried its flexibility but found it very accurate. There is nothing on the upper grill of the smartphone. The lower grill of the smartphone contains 3.5 mm headphone jack and a speaker grill which is well managed. Also, I noticed the quality of power and volume buttons are wonderful as they do not make a click sound on being pressed. The back of the On7 Prime is purely metallic and it shows Samsung is very realistic nowadays. Overall, the design could have been implemented better if it was 18:9 aspect ratio smartphone with less bezels, but apart from that, Samsung has done a wonderful job.

The smartphone uses a PLS(Plane-to Line Switching) technology for display which is way better than IPS technology. If you are gaming lover and would like to play games on a high-end device, PLS display would help you do so. I'm glad Samsung has innovated something new here otherwise all the smartphones have same display configurations. Samsung On7 Prime has the prior advantage here. The On7 Prime has Full HD Resolution (1080x1920 pixels) on its display with additional features like Capacitive Touchscreen and Multitouch. There is also Corning Gorilla Glass Protection(unspecified version) on its display section to protect its screen and got 2.5D Curved Glass Display. The main highlight here is the PLS Technology which you can't ignore if you're a gaming lover.

User Interface

The Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime is running on Android v7.1.1 Nougat with Samsung Experience 8.5 UI on its top. I'm really surprised by the move Samsung has still not opted for Stock version of Android in any of their smartphones and carry on with their Ego problems. However, the Samsung's UI is not bad but still, many users would have wanted a stock experience due to additional bloatwares and battery problems. I'm surprised and maybe this is not a smart move by Samsung. But overall, we can't degrade Samsung Experience 8.5 UI as it has all the necessary functions and would not let you down for sure.

Earlier, everyone thought Samsung would come with the best mid-range processor of all time, Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, but rather, Samsung had their own plans to commit. They have installed a wonderful Octa-Core 1.6GHz Exynos 7870 Processor with ARM Mali T-830 MP1 which I found is a better option than Snapdragon 625 SoC. Samsung would have paid a lot of amount to Qualcomm which they just saved by installing their own processors. This is a wonderful processors where all the cores are clocked on 1.6 GHz.

Apart from this, it also has 3 GB DDR3 RAM and 32 GB Internal Storage. I realised there is also a dedicated microSD Card slot along with 2 Nano SIM Cards, so you can expand upto 256 GB upon your choice. Overall, this is a decent combination.

Samsung is not a very famous name if you talk about the Cameras as they never competed against Vivo, Oppo and OnePlus in the camera department, but this time they have beaten all the odds. The rear camera on On7 Prime is a 13 MP CMOS Sensor with f/1.9 aperture lens which can shoot some wonderful images you would ever imagine. It has several other features like Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, panorama, Dual-LED flash, phase detection autofocus.

The front camera is a 8 MP CMOS Sensor with again f/1.9 aperture lens and can click beautiful selfies even in indoor lighting conditions. Overall, the camera department is awesome. However, Samsung has not managed to give 2 rear cameras at the back where it is a trend nowadays but still, it has a decent camera if you don't shoot Bokeh effect images.

Samsung has not a very good track record against Batteries so they always give less batteries so as to maintain safety. The Samsung On7 Prime is loaded with Non removable 3300 mAH Li-Ion Battery which can give an on screen time upto 6 hours. Since, it has some additional bloatwares, it still has a wonderful battery backup and that's what motivates me. The battery back up time of On7 Prime is as follows:

  • Internet usage time(WiFi) upto 16 hours
  • Video playback time upto 14 hours
  • Audio playback time upto 84 hours

Pros and Cons

  1. PLS Display
  2. Dedicated microSD Card Slot
  3. Octa-core Exynos 7870 Processor

  1. No Dual Rear cameras Setup
  2. No Stock Android Experience
  3. Traditional 16:9 aspect ratio

My Opinions

The Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime is priced at Rs.12999/- for 3GB|32GB Variant and Rs.14999/- for 4GB|64GB variant. The prices are very flexible and I don't think there will be price cut in coming few days. This smartphone is for the people who have somehow expanded budget of around Rs. 15000/- and looking for a smartphone with a better brand name and wonderful facilities. Samsung is a very well reputed brand and this fact can't be ignore while watching this smartphone. Although, there is a very cut throat competition against Xiaom Mi A1 and Honor 9 Lite in the markets. Let's see if On7 Prime survives or fails in the industry being such an interesting smartphone
