Xiaomi Redmi 5A Hands on Review and First Impressions

Xiaomi has launched another smartphone in India as they were earlier promoting with the name of "Desh ka smartphone". The smartphone they have launched is a purely budget oriented smartphone which has nothing to do with high end tasks but when you hear its price, you will be shocked as well. Now, we got this review unit but unfortunately only for 1 hour, thereby, here are we presenting you the hands on review of Xiaomi Redmi 5A with our initial impressions. I hope you would like the idea of Redmi 5A:

Xiaomi Redmi 5A Specifications

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC
  • Android v7.1.2. Nougat with MIUI 9
  • 5 inches HD IPS Display
  • 2/3 GB RAM
  • 16/32 GB Internal Storage (expandable upto 128 GB)
  • 13 MP Rear Camera with f/2.2 PDAF and LED Flash
  • 5 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture
  • 3000 mAH battery

Now the specifications aren't high end but still if you note the price tage of Redmi 5A, they would appeal better. At least, I don't remember a smartphone other than Xiaomi providing Snapdragon processor in this price range. Nokia tried Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 SoC but it is way inferior than Snapdragon 425 SoC. So, a big thumbs up here to the processor and other specifications as well.

The design of Xiaomi Redmi 5A is not new and that's what I hated about them. If you're launching a new smartphone with so much promotions and branding, you could have changed designs. I do not expect some major changes, but some minor changes could have been there. The design of Redmi 5A is that of typically Redmi 4A and Redmi 4 which we have seen enough in the past from Redmi 2S and Redmi 3S prime as well. This is the part where I started hating Xiaomi and this is all legit.

Another con of design part is the missing link of Redmi 5A is the fingerprint scanner. Maybe, this could be very expectional factor but they could have added.

The overall back body of Redmi 5A is pure plastic and its not mettalic. Instead, to fool you, they have used metallic polish which is not acceptable. But this is totally polycarbonate body.

Only good thing which I could spon under there design part is they have dedicated microSD card slot along with 2 Nano SIMs. Typically, you don't see this in a budget ranged smartphone but overall, I'm not at all satisfied with their design part since its all copied from earlier versions.

Under the hood, you also get 5 inches HD IPS Capactive display touchscreen having a resolution of 720p (720x1280 pixels). Now, this is okay since you are not providing QWVGA screen display. But what you lack in the display part is the protection. Redmi 5A doesn't provide you with any protection like Corning Gorilla Glass or 2.5D Curved Display.

Also, the adaptive brightness is not sharp, you don't see too bright in outdoor conditions and its fairly cheap type of display. But then, what more do you expect in this price range.

Firstly, let's talk about the processor part, the Xiaomi has provided Redmi 5A with Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC which is way better than any of the processors you will be getting in this price range. Although, this doesn't mean MediaTek processors aren't good, but if you are looking for a smooth and better performance for your smartphone, this may be the right choice.

Now this device is also available in 2/3 GB RAM. I feel 2GB is not sufficient if you want to run heavy apps and games on your smartphone and they would lag anyways. Also, the internal storage is 16 GB out of which only 8.85 GB could be used for storage. So, having an external storage would be necessary for you.

Also, the battery used is Lithium-Ion non removable battery of capacity 3000mAH battery. Generally, smartphones have Li-ion batteries.

Software and MIUI 9

The smartphone Redmi 5A runs on Android v7.1.2 Nougat which is not the latest right now. Talking about Android Oreo update, Xiaomi never commented on this topic means you will never get Oreo update on your Redmi 5A smartphone which is not tolerated. I know, this is a budget ranged smartphone but what would be its use if you don't provide Android Oreo update in this smartphone.

Also, it has typical MIUI 9 and not stock Android. I'm not getting harsh on Xiaomi but they could have let it as it is. Nowadays, most people have demand for Stock Android and this could have been a better option. Overall, I'm not happy with the software part of Xiaomi Redmi 5A.

There is good setup of rear camera having 13 MP rear camera shooter with f/2.2 aperture lens with 1.12um micron size. You won't fell any change since the camera is as it was in Redmi 4A.

To be honest, I felt there are no advancements in the camera portion but the camera is still a wonferful camera if you don't click photos often.

The front camera is a 5 MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture and captures selfie even in low light. However, there is no front flash but I feel selfie camera is somehow better if you compare it with other smartphone in this price range. Again, there are no improvements from Redmi 4A.

The cost of Xiaomi Redmi 5A for 2GB /16GB variant is kept at Rs.4999/- and for the 3GB/ 32GB is kept at Rs.6999/-. Most people don't know that Redmi 5A for 2GB/16GB is priced at Rs.4999/- only for first 5 million units. After that, the rates would hike at Rs.5999/-

So, for the first 5 million subscribers, many many congratulations, but then it's just not worth it as the same set you are getting in Redmi 4A.

My Opinions

Xiaomi has just thrashed its reputation by launching this smartphone. I still don't know why they have launched Redmi 5A with same set of specifications as that of Redmi 4A. If they wanted to launch this smartphone at low price, they simply could have given offer in Redmi 4A for another 5 million units. Instead, they launched a smartphone with 0 improvements from its predecessor Redmi 4A. So, I felt this was just more like a hype and nothing else.

However, they worked pretty well with the pricing section, but what's the use when you haven't come up with something better and something innovative.
