For the soundtrack to the 2008 rom-com 27 DRESSES, the filmmakers enlisted prolific American composer Randy Edelman to create breezy pieces befitting the wedding-themed flick. From "A Perfect Wedding Day" to "Jumping Ship" to "Another Cuppa Tea," Edelman playfully mixes stately orchestral sounds with light pop/rock elements, resulting in a sweet musical confection.

American musical tastes are capricious and often low-brow. An artist who scores a hit one day is forgotten the next. Certain singers have evaded this fate, for better or for worse, by recording every type of material put before them. Running the gamut, Andy Williams has tackled rock, country, and spirituals. On this CD, he arrives on Hawaiian shores. Williams and these 10 tunes were made for each other, as his mellow baritone fits perfectly with the Hawaiian guitars and violins. This is especially true when he prolongs his notes for romantic effect in songs like "The Hawaiian Wedding Song." Many of these songs are obscure today, but "Bali Ha'i" and "Some Enchanted Evening" are masterworks that defy categorization. Williams' easy way with this material is an indication of his value in American pop music.

Lo-fi meets high concept in Elf Power's first nationally released full-length album; a send -up of Tolkien-damaged, Canterbury concept albums, with liner notes that barely let the band off the hook and great vintage fantasy art on the insert. But don't dust off the Dungeons and Dragons yet, because the music is more like a drunken wedding of Guided By Voices and The Flaming Lips. The album includes contributions from members of Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control, delightful touches of tape loops and shawm, and a whole-hearted, full-throttle cover of Brian Eno's "Needles In The Camel's Eye," whose lyrics amusingly fit right in with the record's concept. These are off-key nursery rhymes that will leave you with a giddy, day-glo hallucinogenic smile.

The North Indian shehnai, a woodwind with a plaintive sound pitched somewhere between a trumpet and oboe, is traditionally used in weddings and other outdoor processions. Ali Ahmad Hussain Khan, much beloved in his native India, is generally considered to be the world's premier shehnai player. Here he offers four hypnotic ragas, meant to be played in the evening as a way to unwind after the day's stresses.
