Penned by award-winning cinematic composer James Horner, the soundtrack of TITANIC re-creates the romance and adventure of the hit film. The story of the expensive and unsinkable behemoth that collided with an iceberg and quickly sunk has been told countless times. Yet the tale of the doomed Titanic has been turned into a love story, which underscores the triumph of the heart above even the most impossible odds. Horner's swelling orchestrations are equally inspiring and ominous, bringing to life the film's magical moments, from the ship's triumphant departure to its well-known sinking, running the gamut of emotions adeptly. Back to Titanic by Original Soundtrack
Original music composed by James Horner. Producers: Randy Gerston, John Altman, Lorenz Hasler, Walter Afanasieff, James Horner. One of the reasons that TITANIC was the entertainment event of the '90s had nothing to do with little Leonardo. James Horner's score (and of course Celine Dion's megahit) connected with the public in a major way, pushing sales of both the soundtrack and the movie tickets through the roof. Horner produced so much poignant music for TITANIC that it couldn't all be included on the original soundtrack album. Thus, BACK TO TITANIC. This disc allows the listener to venture further into the lush, haunting world of Horner's orchestrations, which combine classical themes with Celtic elements and cutting-edge pop technology. Shoring up the Celtic end of things, there are contributions from Maire Brennan ("Come Josephine, In My Flying Machine") and Eileen Ivers ("Nearer My God To Thee"). Celine Dion even makes a return appearance, providing the narration on "My Heart Will Go On." If you've...

Bicentennial Man by Original Soundtrack
Original score composed by James Horner. Recorded at TODD-AO Scoring Stage, Studio City, California. An end title song sung by Celine Dion notwithstanding, TITANIC composer Horner's orchestral score for this Robin Williams vehicle (based on a story by sci-fi great Isaac Asimov) has very little in common with his Oscar-winning aquatic music. BICENTENNIAL MAN is more explicitly modernist (translation: an occasional dissonance can be heard), and the Celtic melodies are dispensed with, although the overall tone of the score is serenely romantic. Actually, this harks back to some of Horner's earlier music; as a film composer, he cut his teeth on sci-fi flicks like BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS and STAR TREK II, and you can hear elements of those earlier works here. Interestingly, the main title--"The Machine Age"--is the wittiest and least characteristic bit of the score, with deliberate echoes of avant-garde composer George Antheil's Jazz Age Twenties masterwork "Ballet Mechanique (by the '50s, of course, Antheil ...

Troy by Original Soundtrack
Composer: James Horner. Additional personnel: Josh Groban, The Bulgarian Women's Choir (vocals). Recording information: 2004. Throbbing drums, wailing chants, and ominous strings herald the onset of TROY, James Horner's sweepingly atmospheric score to Wolfgang Petersen's Homer-based epic. Horner excels at evoking celluloid in sound, be it folksy sentiments in the baseball fantasy FIELD OF DREAMS or all-consuming shipboard romance and tragedy in the period nautical-disaster movie TITANIC. Here he skillfully sets the scene with the heraldic opening salvo of "3200 Years Ago," followed by the shining city splendor of "Troy." Horner is also a master of the tense musical preamble, as evidenced by the brooding arrangement of "The Night Before," which foreshadows tragedy in "The Greek Army and Its Defeat." There's some relief from the unremitting tension in the romantic "Briseis and Achilles," but since this is a Greek myth, the tale shifts the proceedings back to the battle for Troy, to the sound of much lament...

The Perfect Storm by Original Soundtrack
Original score composed by James Horner. Producers: James Horner, Simon Rhodes, John Mellencamp, Michael Wanchic. If composer James Horner's highest profile follow-up to his Oscar-winning music for TITANIC proves anything, it's that Horner is now the pre-eminent purveyor of scores for big budget films about ships in peril. The music itself is in Horner's usual accomplished but derivative vein, an eclectic mix of classical influences--echoes of Copland, Prokofiev, Mahler, and Rachmaninov--and film composers from Hollywood's Golden Age, in particular Ernest Gold. The most interesting new wrinkle here is the occasional addition of rock instrumentation, which gives certain selections a vaguely world-beat feel (apparently in lieu of more specific New England sea shanties). John Cougar, however, seems an odd choice to sing the obligatory closing-title ballad; the song itself is pitched at the low end of his vocal register, and he sounds as vaguely uncomfortable with it as Bob Dylan did with his brief turn on "...

The Spiderwick Chronicles by Original Soundtrack
Based on a popular series of children's fantasy novels, THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES benefits from an orchestral score by veteran film composer James Horner (TITANIC, TROY). On tracks such as "Writing the Chronicles" and "Thimbletack and the Goblins," Horner effectively uses strings, horns, and woodwinds to capture the wonder of discovering a magical world, often recalling John Williams's work on the initial HARRY POTTER movies.

Pearl Harbor by Original Soundtrack
Original score composed by Hans Zimmer. Producers: Trevor Horn, Byron Gallimore, Bob Badami. "There You'll Be" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and for Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. Faith Hill's TITANIC-style "There You'll Be," a song that will live in infamy, leads off this soundtrack to Hollywood's latest tribute to the men and women who fought and died in America's bloody introduction to World War 2. It's fittingly sweeping and majestic, as is the rest of this soundtrack CD. The simple, heart-tugging musical theme is stated and extemporized upon through the movie's various stages--it does double duty as the soundtrack to what is both a war film and a love story. As with most movie soundtracks, only the orchestration changes. These pieces are an uplifting, and at times moving, memento of an old fashioned Hollywood blockbuster.

The Mask of Zorro by Original Soundtrack
Original score composed by James Horner. Producers: Jim Steinman, Simon Rhodes, Tony Hinnigan, James Horner. It's hard to imagine a more surefire recipe for a summer blockbuster--THE MASK OF ZORRO not only stars heartthrob Antonio Banderas and credibility magnet Anthony Hopkins, but just to be absolutely sure, the score is by none other that James Horner, the man who put together the mega-hit score of TITANIC (you may have heard of it). Just as he did in the story of the ill fated vessel, Horner manages to capture every second of the film's thrill-a-minute excitement, as well as giving voice to the passion which drives the film's hero. The film's music uses dramatic swells and Latin percussion to tell the story of the mysterious crusader; its love theme is as well-cast as the film itself--Puerto Rican superstar Marc Anthony teams up with Australian siren Tina Arena for the romantic epic "I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You."

The Legend of Zorro by Original Soundtrack
Composer: James Horner. Seven years after his score for the first Zorro film starring Antonio Banderas (1998's THE MASK OF ZORRO), composer James Horner (TITANIC, FLIGHTPLAN) returned for the movie's sequel, THE LEGEND OF ZORRO. Here, as on the earlier soundtrack, Horner creates potent orchestral pieces that perfectly reflect the film's events, with moods ranging from dire to playful.
